Mysteriuos Broadcast...Q.Q
« on: January 17, 2010, 09:29:51 PM »
Anyone ever heard of the station: UVB-76
Found it recently on a website of mine and scares me, and no, 4chan is NOT AT ALL involved!!

So, I'm pretty much gonna have to "spam" parts of this to make some of this..."Clear"
Some info.

UVB-76 is the callsign of a shortwave radio station that usually broadcasts on the frequency 4625 kHz (AM full carrier). It's known among radio listeners by the nickname "The Buzzer". It features a short, monotonous buzz tone, repeating at a rate of approximately 25 tones per minute, for 24 hours per day. The station has been observed since around 1982.

In rare occasions the buzzer signal is interrupted and a voice transmission in Russian takes place. Only three such events have been noted.

There is much speculation; however, the actual purpose of this station remains unknown.

-------------------
What is it?

It is an irritating, electronic noise , not unlike the sound of a truck horn played through a cheese grater. It is broadcast over a certain frequency, constantly, and has been since at least 1982. But the weird part isn't the tone, but what happens when it stops.

its 20-something year run, the sound has been interrupted only three times, the earliest known time being Christmas Eve in 1997. Each time a voice comes on and lists several Russian names and numbers before returning to the foghorn. The most recent occurrence was 2006, a mere three years before the time of this writing. It is clearly becoming more active after remaining quiet during the Cold War.

The case gets curiouser when you realize that the noise is apparently something held up to a live microphone rather than a recording or just some random feedback (distant conversations can be sometimes heard behind the sound, though they're difficult to decipher).

That is, someone is actively broadcasting and maintaining the signal.

So What's the Deal?

Information on the mysterious station had been compiled here on Geocities, the best place for code cracking and speculation on the Web. From this, we know it originates from Russia, specifically here:

That listener claimed the operator is the "1st Communications Hub of the General Staff of Army," and its purpose was to "transmit orders to the military units and recruitment centers of the Moscow military district."
Wikipedia argues that this makes no sense, since it's mostly just that simple buzztone.

Other theories are that the transmission is part of the Dead Hand system. The purpose of the "dead hand" system (as described in a book of the same name) was to maintain a second strike capability, by ensuring that the destruction of the Soviet leadership would not have prevented the Soviet military from releasing its weapons.

Quote
The dead-hand system he [Dr. Blair] describes today takes this defensive trend to its logical, if chilling, conclusion. The automated system in theory would allow Moscow to respond to a Western attack even if top military commanders had been killed and the capitol incinerated.

The heart of the system is said to lie in deep underground bunkers south of Moscow and at backup locations. In a crisis, military officials would send a coded message to the bunkers, switching on the dead hand. If nearby ground-level sensors detected a nuclear attack on Moscow, and if a break was detected in communications links with top military commanders, the system would send low-frequency signals over underground antennas to special rockets.

Flying high over missile fields and other military sites, these rockets in turn would broadcast attack orders to missiles, bombers and, via radio relays, submarines at sea. Contrary to some Western beliefs, Dr. Blair says, many of Russia's nuclear-armed missiles in underground silos and on mobile launchers can be fired automatically.

It is not known whether Russia continues to use the system, and it is possible that it is still in place. Some commentators state the system never operated in fully automatic mode.

An article in Wired magazine from September 2009 indicates that not only does Dead Hand still exist, but that it is also ready to react as intended. The article goes on to state that Dead Hand still receives system upgrades.

More to come, now questions or beliefs :\

Reminds me of Lost, the radio on the Island which broadcasts numbers constantly. Fascinating, given the similarities of the two, how they're on loop and such. Maybe that's where the radio signal on Lost was thought of from.

#6. Numbers Stations

What is it?

Similar to The Backwards Music Station, a Number Station broadcasts seemingly encoded messages for an unknown purpose, in a very creepy fashion. However, unlike The BMS, Numbers Stations transmit artificially generated voices reading strings of numbers, letters or words. Sometimes including a separating clip of music or a sound.

When you first hear about a Number Station, most people think of the ridiculous TV show Lost and the repeating stream of unlucky numbers (4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42) that are broadcast from a radio tower on the island. The writer of the series J.J. Abrams will have undoubtedly gotten the idea from this phenomena.

These transmissions have been heard in many different languages but are generally all spoken by female voices, though sometimes male or even children's voices are used, just to make them a little more spine-chilling.

I have a few different examples of Numbers Stations here, i'll do my best to give info for each one:

  • Phonetic Alphabet Nato - A female voice repeats "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" in what seems to be a Russian accent. The band Wilco used this as the title of one of their albums and have a sample of the recording in some songs.
  • Lincolnshire Poacher - A Series of changing numbers that used two bars from the English folk song "The Lincolnshire Poacher" as an interval signal. Transmitted from an RAF base in Cyprus. Seemingly inactive as of July 2008.
  • E10 YHF being jammed by the mysterious "Chinese Music Station" - This jammer has been dubbed the Chinese Fire Dragon Jammer and purportedly comes from Hainan Island which is located in the Gulf of Tonkin and is a part of the People's Republic of China.
  • Swedish Rhapsody - Ok seriously, what's with all the creepy children's music, these people know how to make peoples skin crawl.
  • The Crackle - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLCjYtq4H9o A mysterious number station that often interferes with neighboring frequencies as it wanders around the band, never sticking with one frequency. It's sound has been described as "dragging tin cans across the floor" but I find it somewhat similar to the Imperial Probe Droids from "The Empire Strikes Back".
  • The Rapid Asian Numbers Station - http://youtube.com/watch?v=ymhqL1MQwfE The rapid Asian number station is a broadcast over 7726kHz broadcasted out of somewhere in the heart of China. Also known as the "Chinese Robot" this number station has a odd background screech to amplify the creepiness of the female Asian voice rapidly firing numbers. The voice seems to be saying English numbers which only add to the creepy factor.
If you are a little crazy and get obsessed by these recordings or something, here is a massive streamable list of 150 recordings from The Conet Project , a collection of Numbers Stations recordings gathered by an enthusiast.

So What's the Deal?

Evidence supports popular assumptions that the broadcasts are used to send messages to undercover agents operating in other countries (known as illegals), to be decoded using a one-time pad or other decoding device. This usage has not been publicly acknowledged by any government that may operate a numbers station.

In fact, only the theory about communication with spies has ever garnered any official support, and that in the form of the US government accusing the government of Cuba of using the well-known “Atención” Number Station to instruct agents working in the states. The case included having found one of the spies’ laptop computers, and the decryption program thereon. With that program they were able to understand the otherwise befuddling messages. Further—if empirical—evidence of this theory is that since the end of the cold war the occurrences of Numbers Stations have greatly reduced.

There are also tales of these being messages from those lost in the Bermuda Triangle, or MiB telling each other who to harass, but as tantalizing as such tales are, there is nothing to support them.

When a Numbers Station is found there are some diligent souls who take it upon themselves to break out their radio gear and attempt to track the broadcast to its origin, but few are ever found. In the cases where a suspect site is located, no one has been waiting there to claim responsibility. So the search continues.
