I've heard of people making money on it, but kinda suspect you have to be glued to the computer 24/7 to get anything worthwhile.

You can earn money from Google AdSense, yes.

You earn a few cents (american) for every time an ad is clicked - YouTube allows you to do this if you're a YouTube partner, but becoming a Partner is really hard as there is pre-requisites. (1000 video views per video on average, 500+ subscribers, regular videos posted etc).
